CD OF THE WEEK

Whatever Marc Godfrey has done, he's been true to his roots. Or, at least they're identifiable even if there has been slight changes of emphasis. Whether fronting the Valentinos or going solo as Soul Kid #1(the closest he has come so far to breaking out, if not understood), Godfrey has danced on rock's darker side but hasn't forgotten that you need hooks more than you need a concept. So, his new Vampire Bats and their self-named album mixes attitude and melody.

A brief self-description of Vampire Bats drops the name Bauhaus, but the group sounds more like Bauhaus's aftermath, Love And Rockets, with an element of Lords Of The New Church added. Goth-rock you can sing along to.
